According to official reports on March 20, floods triggered by torrential rain have forced more than 7,000 people from their homes in Sri Lanka, with some taking shelter in schools and mosques. Flooding and ensuing mass displacement are common in Sri Lanka, often fueled by monsoon rains. The latest flood victims included families living in basic camps, which had already been displaced by renewed war between the state and Tamil Tiger rebels. Tens of thousands of people along the coastal belt of the district was badly affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami and many are still living in temporary shelters.
