A sunken 16th Century church in Chiapas, Mexico, has emerged after the water levels in a surrounding reservoir dropped. The church is now providing a new home for local birds and a new fort for locals to explore. Visitor Amelia Jimenez commented, “We came to see it. Sometimes we think that when it's submerged in water the church will erode quickly but it doesn't. It's there still.” The church was built in 1554 by Dominican friars. When the reservoir was added in 1966, the area flooded.Waters rose above the church's 10-meter tall walls. Then when the drought hit the Grijalba river this year, the water levels dropped some 24 meters, revealing a decrepit interior but a cultural wonder.
