Watch: Historic moment shows astronaut in outer space controlling a moveable device on earth
Updated on Jun 05, 2015 12:57 pm IST
NASA astronaut Terry Virts, aboard the International Space Station (ISS), and ESA telerobotics specialist André Schiele, in the Netherlands, made space history this week with the first telerobotic "handshake" between space and Earth. It is for the first time that an astronaut working in outer space has controlled a moveable device on earth. The space 'handshake' is a part of a project called Haptics 2. The word haptic refers to devices that convey a sense of touch, something essential to carrying out remote tasks such as inserting a pin or turning a screw. Advances in telerobotic systems using haptic feedback may also be used on Earth in remote, dangerous or extreme conditions.
