Russia defended its ongoing assault on Ukraine at a United Nations Security Council meeting on Thursday (November 20), while the United States and Ukraine pushed for an immediate ceasefire and a credible path toward peace. Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of enforcing “violent mobilization” and seeking a ceasefire only to regroup exhausted troops. The U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Mike Waltz, countered by urging all parties to halt the fighting, saying diplomacy is the only way to reach a durable and just peace. During the session, Ukraine reported that Russia struck the city of Zaporizhzhia, killing five and injuring three, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov. Images from the scene showed buildings on fire and heavy destruction from guided bomb attacks.
