Former Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar on Friday said the outcome of Bangladesh's recent 13th National Parliamentary Elections, which saw victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), sends a strong message about the electorate's priorities, particularly the role of women voters.

Speaking to ANI, Akbar said, "The biggest message of this election is that the Bangladeshi women have demolished the Jamaat-e-Islami. They have done so because Jamaat represented an anti-women platform," while reacting to the results in Delhi.

Bangladesh election results 2026 live updates: Set to be PM, Tarique Rahman has a controversial past

Bangladesh election results 2026 live updates: Tarique Rahman, poised to become Bangladesh’s next Prime Minister, has had a politically controversial career.

Targeted by multiple criminal cases under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, Rahman spent 17 years in self-imposed exile in London.

In 2018, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with a 2004 grenade attack on Hasina that killed at least 24 people; Hasina narrowly survived. Rahman and the BNP denied his involvement, calling the verdict politically motivated.

Rahman left Bangladesh in 2008, officially for medical treatment, after reportedly enduring torture while in custody during the military-backed administration that ruled from 2006 to 2008. This followed the failure of the caretaker government to hold elections peacefully and transfer power after the Khalida Zia government.

Although he never held office in his mother Begum Khaleda Zia’s governments, Rahman wielded significant influence within the BNP, serving as acting chairman, senior vice chairman, and senior joint secretary.

A leaked set of US diplomatic cables, reported by the Associated Press, described him as “phenomenally corrupt.”
