Bangladesh election result 2026 updates: Tarique Rahman is set to become the Prime Minister of Bangladesh after his party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), marked a resounding victory in the 13th national elections held on February 12. The party is now holding talks with its allies for the government formation, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

The BNP and its allies have secured 212 seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami and its 11 allies managed to get 77 seats, according to Bangladesh daily the Daily Star. Counting has been completed for 297 constituencies, Prothom Alo quoted the Election Commission as saying, and results have been withheld for two seats over legal issues.

Most voters also backed the reforms proposal under the July National Charter as voting on Thursday was also held for the national referendum to decide if the July National Charter, which proposes constitutional reforms, will be adopted or not.

The elections are also being termed landmark as this was for the first that polls were held since the student-led uprising of July 2024 that toppled the Sheikh Hasina's 15-year-long government, sending Hasina into exile to India. Following her ouster, Bangladesh was administered by an interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus which has been in place for 18 months now.

The election was seen as a direct contest between the BNP and its former ally, Jamaat-e-Islami, in the absence of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina's now disbanded Awami League.

The BNP had earlier announced that if it won the election, its chairman and former premier, Khaleda Zia's son, Tarique Rahman, would be the next prime minister of Bangladesh.
