A zoo in the Egyptian capital Cairo has become the butt of jokes for trying to pass off donkeys as zebras by painting black stripes on them.
Mahmoud Sarhan spotted the two strange-looking zebras with long pointy ears at the International Garden municipal park. Sarhan, a student, grew suspicious when the black paint on those animals started to smudge due to the hot weather.
He then clicked a photo of the painted donkeys and shared it on his Facebook account on July 21. His post was picked up by social media users and in no time it became viral with over 10,000 reactions and more than 7,600 shares.
While the picture showed only one donkey, Sarhan told the BBC he saw two of them painted like zebras.
Zoo director Mohamed Sultan, however, insisted the animals Sarhan saw were real zebras, according to the BBC report.
It is not the first time that a zoo has tried to pass off a donkey as a zebra.
A zoo in Palestine’s Gaza said they had to dye donkeys as they could not afford real zebras due to the Israeli blockade.
“The children don’t know so they call them zebras and they are happy to see something new,” Nidal Barghouthi, the owner of the zoo, told Reuters at that time.
