While the ones behind the recent explosion remain unidentified, many of the attacks in the nation are claimed by the local arm of the militant Islamic State group.

“According to preliminary reports, a number of people were killed and injured,” Reuters reported quoting Taliban interior ministry spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qani as saying who added that further details would be released later.

The explosion struck Kabul's Shahr-e-Naw, which is predominantly safe and inhabited by foreign nationals includes large office buildings, shopping complexes and embassies.

According to a report by AP, another spokesman Khalid Zadran said that the explosion struck at a hotel in the Shahr-e-Naw district, causing a number of casualties.

The report also cited footage from the local media channels that showed people in a street with smoke and dust billowing behind them.

As per a statement from a humanitarian group's country director in Afghanistan, 20 people have been admitted to its hospital. “So far, we have received 20 people at our hospital. Among the wounded are four women and a child,” director Dejan Panic said adding that some of the wounded who were being assessed for surgery have suffered lacerations and bruises.

Panic said that seven people were declared dead on arrival.

Authorities said that investigation is underway and that there was no immediate word on the cause of the explosion.

Although when the Taliban said that it would restore security in Afghanistan when it took over the war-torn nation in 2021, attacks have continued to bruise the region.
