Russia-Ukraine crisis: Zelenskyy to address US Congress on Wednesday

Russia-Ukraine war latest news: The announcement was made jointly by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has been applauded globally for his leadership of the eastern European nation at a time when it is being invaded by its neighbour Russia, will deliver a virtual address to the US Congress.

In a joint statement, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, informed that Zelenskyy will deliver a joint address to members of the House and Senate at 9am on Wednesday (1pm GMT, 6:30pm IST). “The Congress, our country, and the world, are in awe of the people of Ukraine. We look forward to the privilege of welcoming President Zelenskyy’s address to the House and Senate and to convey our support to the people of Ukraine as they bravely defend democracy.”

Earlier this month, the Ukrainian President spoke by video with lawmakers from both houses of the US Congress, seeking more military aid.

Previously, Zelenskyy addressed the European Union (EU) and the UK's House of Commons, on March 1 and 8 respectively, earning standing ovation from audience at both places. He also became the first foreign leader to virtually address the House of Commons.

Russia began invasion of Ukraine on February 24, after several days of tensions, with President Vladimir Putin describing the offensive as a ‘special military operation.’ As many as 19 days into the invasion, Russian troops have not been able to capture Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, though they have nearly taken control of all the other major cities in that country.

The offensive has led to the West, including the United States, imposing a host of sanctions against Russia. Those sanctioned include President Putin, members of his regime, Russian oligarchs, among others.
