Velma, OK fire evacuation map: Dangerous wildfire spreads in Stephens County; videos surface
The fire is moving rapidly east-northeast and has prompted evacuation orders.

Update: The wildfire that broke out near Velma, Oklahoma, on Monday afternoon grew to about 149 acres by evening. Evacuations have since been lifted, according to the Velma fire chief.
At 3:50 p.m. EDT, the National Weather Service in Norman said the fire warning for the Velma area had expired. However, officials urged residents to continue following instructions from local authorities.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries or damage to structures.

Initial report: A wildfire is currently burning near Velma in Stephens County, Oklahoma. According to Watch Duty, the fire broke out on Monday afternoon and is moving rapidly east-northeast, prompting evacuation orders.
Evacuation warning
The National Weather Service in Norman issued a fire warning at the request of Stephens County Emergency Management, warning that the smoke and flames could pose a threat to life and property.
"Smoke and fire will present a threat to life and property Evacuations are ongoing in Velma. Be prepared to evacuate quickly if requested and follow all safety instructions from local emergency management officials. Do not drive into smoke."
The warning added, "Firefighters and incident responders should anticipate extreme fire behavior including wind-driven runs, torching, and spot fires. Dangerous fire behavior may exceed traditional offensive suppression tactics and require immediate actions to protect life and property."

Evacuation shelter
According to the Stephens County Sheriff's Office, an evacuation shelter has been opened at the Stephens County Fairgrounds.
In a Facebook post, the sheriff's office said, "Due to the current fire, the Town of Velma is being evacuated and please remain away from the area until further notice. The Stephens County Fairgrounds will be open as a shelter to residents affected by fire evacuations."
