The militants ambushed a minibus carrying the victims on Sunday, which was on its way from Ragh district to the provincial capital Fayzabad, Nazari told Xinhua.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motivation behind the incident was not immediately known.

Badakhshan, like other provinces in northern Afghanistan, has been relatively peaceful.

Due to rising violence in Afghanistan, over 4,600 persons, most of whom were Taliban militants, have been killed in the country this year.
