The security action was part of an operation conducted from December 23-25 near the border with Chechnya, the FSB said.

Among the killed was warlord Vakhi Dzhenaraliyev, who led the group of the 12 militants.

Dzhenaraliyev was on the wanted list of the federal government for a long time for attacks on police and federal troopers.

The security forces also seized a large arsenal of arms and ammunition, the security service said.

Ingushetia, which borders Chechnya, has seen a marked increase in fighting between militants and federal troopers this year.
