Nine people died and 66 are missing after flash floods swept a hill region in eastern Australia, a senior official said, revising earlier tolls.

"We have confirmed a further death. That brings the toll in this incident to nine. Tragically the police believe (the eventual toll) could be more than double that number," Queensland state premier Anna Bligh told reporters.
