Afghan minister and intelligence chief quit over attack

Afghanistan's interior minister and the head of intelligence have resigned over an insurgent attack last week on a national peace conference during its opening by President Hamid Karzai, his office said on a statement on Sunday.

Afghanistan's interior minister and the head of intelligence have resigned over an insurgent attack last week on a national peace conference during its opening by President Hamid Karzai, his office said on a statement on Sunday.

The statement said Karzai had accepted the resignations of Interior Minister Hanif Atmar and intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh after an investigation into Wednesday's attack.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the traditional gathering of Afghan elders and other notables, which came despite a massive security blanket thrown over the capital.
