At least 50 people died in bombings targeting people watching the World Cup at a restaurant and a rugby club in Ugandan capital Kampala, according to local media reports.

"I join President Obama in strongly condemning today's attacks in Kampala, Uganda targeting innocent spectators watching the World Cup final," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement late on Sunday night.

"We understand that American citizens may have been injured or killed and our embassy is reaching out to assist. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims, in the US and Uganda."

The US would work with Uganda to bring the perpetrators to justice, she said.

No one had yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Somali militants had threatened attacks in Kampala because Ugandan troops are in Mogadishu.
