"There are links between terrorist outfits in Britain and Bangladesh and the two countries need intensified cooperation to combat the subversive elements," British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told newsmen at a briefing in Dhaka.

She, however, refused to either elaborate the nature of link of the terrorist groups or identify specific outfits which had links in carrying out terrorism in the two countries.

Smith only said elements of international terrorism traveled wide and most terrorists used dual nationalities to carry out their activities.

Dhaka and London had agreed to help each other in tackling terrorism on both short and long-term basis, she added.

The visiting official also suggested that a joint working group on counter-terrorism could be constituted comprising officials and security personnel of both Bangladesh Britain.

British officials in the country have had brushes with Bangladeshi militancy in the past. Bangladesh-born British envoy in Dhaka Anwar Chowdhury had narrowly escaped a bid on his life in 2004.
