ITAR-TASS news agency said the bomb exploded during horse races in the VIP lodge of a hippodrome in Nalchik. No fatalities were reported.

Kabardino-Balkaria is located near Russia's troubled regions of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan but the level of violence in this region is much lower than is the last three.

North Caucasus is beset by frequent attacks targeting law enforcement officers, part of a surge of violence in the region a decade after wars pitting government forces against Chechen separatists.
