A British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan, taking the death toll since 2001 to 142, the defence ministry in London said.

The soldier, from the 1st Battalion of The Rifles regiment, was killed on Saturday. No more details were released.

Britain has around 8,000 troops based in Afghanistan, most of them deployed in the southern Helmand province.
