"No trace of fire was detected during an inspection of the plane," Valentin Iordache told AFP. "It's possible that a smoke detector malfunctioned."
The Boeing 777 was carrying 303 passengers and 17 crew on the flight from New Delhi to Frankfurt.
No one was injured, Iordache said.
