During his term as President, Musharraf "played an important role in developing the bilateral relations and Chinese side appreciated it very much," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang said here.

Reacting to Musharraf's resignation on Monday ahead of an impeachment process, Qin said, "China sincerely hopes Pakistan will maintain its political stability and economic progress."

The change in Pakistan is its internal affairs, the spokesman said.

"As a friendly neighbour, China sincerely hopes Pakistan will maintain its political stability and economic progress," he said.

"We hope and believe the friendly relationship and cooperation between the two countries will continue to move forward with the joint efforts of the two sides." Qin said.

Musharraf, who shared a close relationship with the top Chinese leadership, cancelled his Beijing visit to attend the opening ceremony of Olympics on August 8.
