China test-fires new nuclear-capable ICBM

China has tested a new generation of intercontinental ballistic missile, the Dongfeng-41, or DF-41, which is believed to have a maximum strike distance of 14,000 kilometers, China Central Television (CCTV), the national broadcaster reported today.

China has tested a new generation of intercontinental ballistic missile, the Dongfeng-41, or DF-41, which is believed to have a maximum strike distance of 14,000 kilometers, China Central Television (CCTV), the national broadcaster reported on Tuesday.

Experts with the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission says as many as 10 nuclear warheads can be put on the missile.

On Wednesday, The Global Times reported that China was developing the capability to put multiple warheads on intercontinental ballistic missiles.

"The new missile's mobility, precession and war head yield combined give China a first strike capability," the report said.

As many as 10 nuclear warheads can be put on the missile.

China claims that it will not be the first one to use nuclear weapons and says its nuclear forces are designed for counter attack against nuclear attack on its territory.

Highlighting the rapid development of China's missile programme which has caused concerns in India, US and other countries, an official told CCTV that the Second Artillery Corp has developed since its inception in 1966.
