A hardware failure at a US State department facility has crippled the visa systems of all US embassies and consulates across the world. The system is expected to be down for at least one week.

"That failure right now is preventing the Department from processing and transmitting the mandatory security-related biometric data checks at our embassies and consulates. This is a global issue, and we're working around the clock to fix it," State Department spokesperson John Kirby said.

All non-immigrant visa interviews scheduled across India from June 22 to 26 stand cancelled. Embassy authorities have requested all applicants to use the US travel documents website to reschedule appointments to date after July 6, 2015.

After the restoration of the visa services, the consulates will notify all applicants when their passports are ready.

In cases where applicants have planned international trips before July 6, the visa application will be put on "Administrative Hold" and the passports will be returned. The cases on hold will remain open for one year.

Kirby promised the issue will be fixed soon and that the regular updates will be put up on the website.
