Thirty-four people, including six policemen, were killed in separate tribal fighting in south Darfur on Friday, security officials and tribal sources said.
Twenty-eight members of the Al-Gamir tribe were killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen on a village in the Ed al-Fursan region, tribal chief Othman Hashim told AFP. He did not give reasons for the attack.
In a separate incident, six policemen were shot dead as they intervened to contain tribal fighting in south Darfur, a security official told AFP.
"Six policemen, including an officer, were killed while attempting to stop a tribal conflict" between the Al-Falata and Habaniya rival tribes, the official said, without providing further details.
Earlier in the day the government in south Darfur had sent reinforcements to contain the fighting, he added.
According to the United Nations, 300,000 people have died and 2.2 million have been displaced in Darfur since rebels took up arms in 2003 against the Arab-dominated government in Khartoum complaining of marginalisation.
But Sudan has put the death toll at 10,000 and denies accusations by the International Criminal Court that members of the Khartoum government orchestrated a campaign of genocide in Darfur.
