The democratic process in Pakistan must be deepened to realise the aspirations of the people, top global leaders, including those from the US and the UK, have underlined.
The Co-Chairs of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP), including US President Barack Obama and the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in a joint statement with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, said democracy in the country must be enabled to deliver on the promise of a new hope.
They highlighted the importance of democracy for realising the aspirations of the people for prosperity and peace.
The summit-level meeting of the FoDP was held on Thursday in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session. It was attended by about a dozen Heads of Government.
Emphasising that Pakistani’s long-term strategic approach to security and socio-economic development presents a constructive framework for international co-operation to confront terrorism, militancy, and extremism, the Group welcomed Pakistan’s commitment to quickly develop and implement an integrated and comprehensive approach to address issues of security and development in the restive FATA region.
