Museum of London archaeologists say they have found the remains of what might be one of the city's earliest theatres and the place where William Shakespeare's plays were first performed.

It was called simply "The Theatre" and was an open-air playhouse where the Bard first acted and then had his own writings put on stage.
The Theatre opened in 1576 but there was a tenancy dispute and the venue was dismantled and rebuilt south of the River Thames in 1599 as the more famous theatre, The Globe.
