A massive fire swept through a bazaar in eastern Morocco, destroying some 1,700 stalls and injuring 31 people, local authorities said.

The fire, the cause of which is still unknown, broke out last afternoon in the Al-Qods souk in the town of Taourirt 450 kilometres east of Rabat, and was only put out by firefighters four hours later.

The covered market of 28,000 square metres had more than 2,000 stalls.
