Long commutes and the highest sales tax in the US have landed Chicago in the Forbes list of America's most miserable cities, which also names Detroit and New York.
Cleveland, Ohio tops the Forbes list of the most miserable city in America due to its brutal winter, high crime and a tortured sports history.
Residents of the 'Mistake by the Lake' city have started voting with their feet, hoping to find better conditions elsewhere. The net migration out of the metro area was 71,000 over the past five years, Forbes said.
"Cleveland takes the top spot in our third annual ranking thanks to its high unemployment, high taxes, lousy weather, corruption by public officials and crummy sports teams," Forbes said.
Chicago ranks number 10 on the list of 20 cities.
"Bigger problems are the nation's highest sales tax rate at 10. 25 per cent and long commutes," Forbes said.
Forbes' 'Misery Measure' took into account unemployment, sales and income tax, commute times, violent crime, weather conditions and how the city's pro sports teams have fared over the past two years.
The magazine also considered corruption based on convictions of public officials in each area as tracked by the US Department of Justice.
