French number one Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will miss his team's Davis Cup quarter-final tie against holders Spain next week because of a knee injury, team captain Guy Forget told Reuters on Friday.

Tsonga, who lost to Andy Murray in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Wednesday, had been picked by Forget to play singles alongside Gael Monfils in the July 9-11 tie in Clermont-Ferrand. Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra should contest the doubles.

Richard Gasquet, who had been selected as an alternate, has also been ruled out, because of back pain, Forget added.

"It's a hard blow because we counted on Jo and Richard," the France captain said.

"Jo has knee problems. You could see it against Murray at Wimbledon. Apparently it's quite serious. He could be out for several weeks. For Richard, it's not quite as bad but he can't train properly."

Forget said he needed time before naming a replacement for Tsonga.

"I have several options," he said. "I need to think about it."
