President Ram Baran Yadav on Wednesday had urged the Maoists to form a consensus government within a week. The Maoists got the invitation to form the government for being the largest political party in the Constituent Assembly.

The Maoists have 226 members in the 601-member house and would need support of at least 75 other members to form a government. The deadline to form the government expires on Tuesday.

The Maoists on Saturday had presented a 50-point Common Minimum Programme (CMP) to 24 other parties to give final shape to the new government. The political parties are yet to respond on Maoist’s CMP proposal.

The Maoists are keen to woo support of the Communist Party of Nepal (Nepal) which has 109 members in the house. The Maoist leadership held a series of meetings with the CPN (UML) leaders on Sunday. However, the CPN (UML) rejected the Maoist proposal on formation of government without the Nepali Congress. The Maoist leaders had said that they were willing to form the government without the Nepali Congress if the attempts for a national consensus failed.
