Indonesian coast rocked by 5.5 magnitude quake

A moderate 5.5 magnitude undersea earthquake hit off Indonesia's Sumatra island today, geologists said, but there were no tsunami warnings.

A moderate 5.5 magnitude undersea earthquake hit off Indonesia's Sumatra island on Saturday, geologists said, but there were no tsunami warnings.

The quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 24 kilometres (15 miles) around 285 kilometres west of Sibolga in Sumatra at 11:26 pm (1626 GMT), according to the US Geological Survey.

The Hawaii based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there were no warnings or advisories following the quake.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and Sumatra is particularly prone to earthquakes.
