Clues of “third party” involvement in the carnage at the Bangladesh Rifles headquarters last month have been found by the high-powered committee probing the rebellion in the paramilitary force.
The investigation found clues of “outsiders” entering at BDR’s Pilkhana headquarters ahead of the February 25-26 massacre, in which 75 people, including 57 army officers, were killed, an unnamed official told the Shamokal newspaper.
“The committee members think the clues of outsiders entrance Pilkhana, the serial killings, tortures on family members of the (army) officers at their residences and murders of officers tracking them down at their hiding places indicate that there was a third party involvement in the incident,” he said preferring anonymity.
He said it appeared from investigation that initially 40 to 50 BDR men had started the mutiny while most of the paramilitary soldiers took up weapons voluntarily or reluctantly to carry out killings, destruction and loot.
The incident that came as measures were underway to consider pending demands and issues of the BDR soldiers, does not appear to be sparked due to the grievances of the soldiers as was initially assumed, the official said.
The probe committee member said the slain BDR chief Major General Shakil Ahmed had sent several letters to authorities asking them to pursue the demands of the soldiers, including enhanced allowances and other facilities.
