The attack also wounded seven people including three police officers, he said.

The security situation in Fallujah -- which lies west of Baghdad and was once a major bastion of the Sunni Arab insurgency -- has improved dramatically in recent months as attacks throughout Iraq have dropped off.

Separate roadside bombings in Mosul killed two Iraqi soldiers and wounded four as they were on patrol in the west of the restive northern city, said a local policeman who declined to be identified.

Another attack in Iskandiriyah, south of the capital Baghdad, killed one Shiite pilgrim and wounded three, local police said.

The number of violent deaths in Iraq fell by a third to 275 in July, the first month local forces have been in charge of security in urban areas since the 2003 US-led invasion.
