The kindergarten is now China’s latest security concern. In the third kindergarten knifing in a month, an unemployed man, 47, armed with a 20-cm knife went on a stabbing spree in eastern China on Thursday, leaving nearly the entire classroom of 28 four-year-olds, two teachers and a guard bleeding.
Thursday’s kindergarten slashing that left five of the children critical was the second knife attack in China in two days. It occurred a day after a former dagger-wielding doctor, 42, who stabbed eight students to death in southern Fujian province in March, was executed by firing squad.
The incidents spread panic among parents that there may be more copycat knifings. Days earlier, the Chinese education ministry had urged schools to upgrade security, teach students basic self-defence and ensure that young students are escorted home.
Thursday’s attack occurred in Taixing city of eastern Jiangsu, one of China’s richest states. On Wednesday, a male art teacher, 33, slashed a teacher and 16 students on the head, arms and back, while attending an open session for teachers at a primary school in southern Leizhou city in Guangdong.
State media reported that the men behind all three attacks were mentally ill. The violence has sparked frantic online debates about the hidden rage in sections of the fast-changing society of the world’s number three economy.
