Sri Lanka on Thursday sought more assistance from India to carry out demining operations in the in the country's former war zone as it thanked New Delhi for its timely humanitarian assistance for the conflict displaced Tamil civilians.
Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama conveyed his government's appreciation to visiting Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur for Indian assistance when she called on him here. Kaur is currently on a three day visit to Sri Lanka to attend the 8th Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Ministerial Meeting in Colombo.
Demining work carried out by the Sri Lanka Army and the Indian demining team are progressing expeditiously, Bogollagama said, adding more assistance was required to complete this process.
"The (Indian Minister) Kaur stated that she was aware of the difficulties in such an exercise and agreed to discuss the possibility of increasing assistance to Sri Lanka and referred to the offer of assistance for rebuilding the Duraiappa Stadium and establishing a cultural centre in Jaffna," the ministry release said.
Bogollagama conveyed Lanka's appreciation for assistance provided to the country by India aftermath of the conflict.
