A mayor was shot dead in central Guatemala, Xinhua reported.

A mayor was shot dead in central Guatemala, Xinhua reported.

Nery Alonso, the mayor of Temahu municipality in Alta Verapaz province, was killed on Monday night after his car was ambushed by gunmen, the National Civil Police said on Tuesday.

He was due to hand over the charge of his office to his successor in January next year. The attackers believed to be involved in drug trafficking.
