Russian President Dmitry Medvedev today categorically ruled out restoration of Soviet political system in his country, saying neither the people nor the rulers want the return to the past.
"I am absolutely confident, today's discussion also, to full extent demonstrates this, that the return to the political system of period of the Soviet Union is impossible.
Just for the simple reason, nobody wants this," Medvedev told the top political leadership of the country.
"No one will accept this, neither the citizens nor the big bosses sitting here" the President underlined at a key Kremlin meet.
Chairing the meeting of the extra-constitutional advisory State Council of Russian Governors and leaders of the political parties to discuss reforms of the political system in the former Communist country, Medvedev declared that there was no danger of turning into an authoritarian regime.
In his opening speech, Medvedev, who is considered a liberal when compared to his mentor and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, said Russia needs a flexible multi-party system on both federal and regional levels to match its bold modernisation plans.
"We need an 'intellectual economy' which can be created only by intelligent people and that is why the society is becoming more complicated," Medvedev said as he stressed the need for keeping in view the opinion and hear the voices of political minorities.
