A ranger working for a government-trained militia was on foot patrol in Yala town early on Wednesday when he was hurt by bomb exploding in a rubbish bin outside a convenience store.

Shrapnel from the bomb injured the man's face but he was not seriously hurt.

In nearby Pattani province, gunmen killed a 33-year-old man and 54-year-old man in their homes on Tuesday evening.

Also on Tuesday evening in Narathiwat province, militants chased a 44-year-old village chief in a pick-up truck before shooting him dead.

More than 3,500 people have been killed since separatist unrest erupted in January 2004 in the far southern region. Tensions have simmered since Thailand annexed the mainly Malay sultanate in 1902.
