Moderate quake shakes Britain

Reports from the BBC and Sky News television carried witness statements saying that the tremors were felt at around 1:00 am (0100 GMT), and lasted for between 10 and 15 seconds.

A moderate earthquake was felt across Britain early on Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The United States Geological Survey said on its website that the tremors measured 4.7 on its 'moment magnitude' scale, which is similar to the Richter scale, but considered more accurate at the upper end.

Reports from the BBC and Sky News television carried witness statements saying that the tremors were felt at around 1:00 am (0100 GMT), and lasted for between 10 and 15 seconds.

The USGS said the earthquake centred at Kingston upon Hull, 205 kilometres (125 milies) north or London, began at 12:56 am.

Local police in Leicestershire, south central England, and emergency services in the region, could not immediately be contacted to provide further details.
