However, they don’t enjoy multitasking and express more negative emotions and stress compared to fathers who often lend a helping hand in household chores, researchers at the Michigan State University have found.

The researchers, who detailed their study in the journal American Sociological Review, found that working mothers spend about 10 hours on average more than their working spouses in doing more than two things at one time.

“Moms today who work full time basically have to worry about working full time and being a mom and a spouse. It makes it very difficult,” Barbara Schneider, a MSU sociologist who led the study, was quoted as saying by LiveScience.

Multitasking may feel productive, but psychological tests have suggested our brains aren’t at their best when divided between two or more tasks.

“What we’re really learning is not only how people are spending their time, but how they’re feeling about it at a very deep and personal level,” Schneider said.
