"So far we have recovered 10 bodies, eight of them are foreigners possibly Turkish nationals -- it is a Turkish helicopter," said Kabul's criminal investigations chief Mohammad Zaher.

"Two children and a woman, have been recovered from the rubble," said interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.

Police and local residents were digging to find survivors, he said.

A spokesman for the US-led NATO force in Kabul said the helicopter was operated by the International Security Assistance Force but would not identify which country's military it belonged to.

"We are investigating the cause of the crash but there were no reports of insurgent activity in the area," he said.
