Nepal’s Maoists on Thursday decided to make a formal request to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to invite the party to form a government.
Even after almost 45 days of emerging as the largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA) election, the Maoists have been caught up in a state of uncertainty and Koirala has not invited them to form the government.
After a series of verbal altercations between the Maoists and other party leaders, the former insurgents have decided to submit a formal proposal at the meeting of the Council of Ministers to Koirala to invite them to form the new government.
“After the CA election, the Koirala-led government has automatically become a caretaker administration and we will request him (Koirala) to clarify his position and immediately invite us to form a government,” Prachanda said in a statement.
CP Gajurel, a Maoist politburo member, said the proposal is being tabled with optimism that Koirala would work on a war footing to prepare the process of government formation. The Maoist ministers have also requested Koirala not to take any decision with far-reaching impact at this crucial political juncture. The cabinet meeting is likely to take place soon to pass an ordinance for swearing in the members of the CA. The first sitting of the CA is scheduled to begin on May 28 and is likely to endorse the decision to declare Nepal as a republic. The newly elected members would be administered oath on May 27.
The Maoists have also decided to form a three-member probe committee headed by senior member Posta Bahadur Bogati to investigate the incident of murder of businessman Ramhari Shrestha. The mysterious murder of Shrestha has sullied the Maoists image as some of its cadres have been accused of being involved in the killing. A bandh was observed on May 21 in protest against the killing.
