Nepal will raise issues like climate change, food security and trafficking of women and children during the upcoming annual UN General Assembly session in New York, besides making efforts to seek "observer" status in the Security Council.
This was stated by Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, who will accompany Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to New York to participate in the session beginning this week. The Premier will lead a 31-member delegation, which will also include Minister for Health Umakant Chaudhari.
Nepal is likely to receive leadership of the Least Development Countries (LDCs) during the UN General Assembly meet, Koirala said.
Bangladesh, the current head of the LDCs, is expected to hand over the leadership to Nepal, she said, adding that her country has also held talks with Dhaka regarding the matter.
If it is given the leadership of LDCs, Nepal will have the opportunity to lead the grouping for the next three years.
Prime Minister Nepal will also brief the UN General Assembly about the progress made in the ongoing peace process. Besides, he will press for making the Nepalese garments accessible to the US market on quota-free basis, Koirala said.
