New Security Council members elected

Nigeria, Brazil, Bosnia, Lebanon and Gabon have won seats on the UN Security Council.

Nigeria, Brazil, Bosnia, Lebanon and Gabon have won seats on the UN Security Council.

The five countries faced no opposition in their bid for seats on the UN's most powerful body and were elected on the first ballot by the 192-member General Assembly.

They will serve two-year terms on the Security Council starting on Jan. 1, 2010.

Bosnia and Lebanon will be in the rare position of being subject to scrutiny by the council while serving on it.
