A top official of the Obama administration on Thursday met members of the Tamil diaspora in Washington to discuss the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka and prospects for political reconciliation in the island country.
The US Charge d'Affaires to Sri Lanka Charge Moor also joined the meeting held at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department through video conferencing.
This was the first such meeting convened by the State Department. The meeting was chaired by the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake.
In the meeting attended by 16 Tamil diaspora, Blake and Moore underscored the importance of political reconciliation in Sri Lanka.
Stressing on the need to achieve a lasting peace, the US has asked to promote justice and political reconciliation for all, and start dialogue with all parties concerned including Tamils inside and outside Sri Lanka on new mechanisms for devolving power and improved human rights condition.
Blake and Moore suggested that the Sri Lankan government and American Tamil Diaspora should seek opportunities to engage in dialogue with each other, an official statement said.
