Official: 4 killed in US helicopter crash

An emergency official says a commercial helicopter has crashed onto the lanes of a highway in western Maryland, killing four people.

Washington County emergency services director Kevin Lewis says the crash happened late Thursday on Interstate 70 near Smithsburg. Troopers have shut down the highway in both directions near the crash site.

It wasn't immediately clear what brought down the helicopter, or whether all the dead were onboard the aircraft.

Smithsburg is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Hagerstown.
