Amin al-Haq, 48, also known as Amin Ah Haq and Muhammed Amin, was arrested in Lahore last week during a special operation by intelligence and law enforcement agencies and is being interrogated at an undisclosed location, The Nation newspaper reported on its website.

Quoting "credible Afghan sources", the newspaper said Amin al-Haq was the second leading Al-Qaeda operative to be arrested in Lahore. It said Mohammed Rahim, who allegedly worked as Bin Laden's driver in Afghanistan, was also apprehended in the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province.

Pakistani officials have not confirmed the arrest. Amin al-Haq was part of the Afghan delegation that went to Sudan in 1996 to bring Bin Laden to Afghanistan. He is believed to be a member of the Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan, which joined the Taliban movement in 1996.

The US froze Amin al-Haq's assets after the 9/11 terror attacks. Born in Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province, he was educated as a physician and practiced medicine in Pakistan.

Amin al-Haq also fought against Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the 1980s and was identified as a senior member of Al-Qaeda in a UN resolution issued in December 2000.
