"There is no confusion at all. Our army and ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence agency) are totally professional. They are sincere, pro-democracy and working under the ambit of the constitution," Gilani told reporters on the sidelines of an official function.

"They are answerable to the prime minister of Pakistan. Therefore there is no confusion and the ISI had old ties with the US," he said.

A media report had recently quoted American officials as saying that elements of the ISI are either actually supporting al-Qaeda and Taliban or are sympathetic to them.

Asked who had masterminded Monday's terrorist assault on a police training centre near Lahore, Gilani said he would not jump to conclusions till the preliminary report of the probe into the incident is finalised.
