Top American Generals in Afghanistan have conveyed worry to the US administration that Pakistan might shift its military emphasis away from its tribal areas where Taliban and al-Qaeda operate as it thinks; "the game is over" after the slaying of Baitullah Mehsud.
The US Generals want Pakistan to keep up the pressure and to go ahead with its proposed offensive against militants in Waziristan despite the killing of Tehrik-e-Taliban chief.
"They think game is over," a senior military official was quoted as saying by the New York Times, who also said: "it's more like, 'game over', next level."
The US commanders with the NATO mission in Afghanistan have told President Barack Obama's special envoy to the region Richard Holbrooke this weekend that they did not have enough troops to do their job and had been pushed passed their limits by Taliban insurgents, who operate across border.
"The problems in Afghanistan have been aggravated by what the American commanders call the Pakistan military's limited response to the threat of militants based there," US commanders said.
Maj Gen Curtis Scaparrotti, commander of the US and NATO forces in eastern Afghanistan, told Holbrooke that it was important for Pakistan to keep up the pressure on Taliban militants particularly after the killing of Mehsud.
