Foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told the National Assembly that Pakistan did not desire membership of the top UN body, the Express Tribune newspaper said.

In a written reply, the minister said the idea of permanent membership was "contrary to the spirit of democracy and accountability".
In an obvious reference to India, Qureshi said that "some aspirants for the UNSC seat are creating divisions among the international community".
He said the restructuring of the Security Council should be carried out only with consensus.
