Tightening control over the beleaguered king, Nepal's Parliament has empowered itself to abolish the country's 238-year-old monarchy if the royal interferes in crucial elections scheduled for November.
A majority of members voted in favour of the second amendment bill to the Interim Constitution which allows Parliament to end the monarchy by a two-third majority votes if the king was found to be involved in serious conspiracy to disrupt the Constituent Assembly polls.
However, the cabinet has to decide whether the King is involved in a serious conspiracy or not, said Nepali Congress (Democratic) leader and Parliament member Bimalendra Nidhi.
"This is an historic decision," he said adding the people are empowered for the first time to make a decision about monarchy.
"The 1990 Constitution had the provision of the King-in-Parliament, which has now been abolished. Now with the new amendment in effect the King is at the wishes of the Parliament", Nidhi told PTI.
Now no one can obstruct the Constituent Assembly election, which is a must to decide the fate of the country, he said.
The CA polls will not only rewrite the constitution but also decide the fate of the monarchy. There is a provision in the Constitution to decide the fate of the monarchy through the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly.
Another important amendment includes a clause to remove the prime minister through a Parliamentary vote. One fourth of the members in Parliament can table a motion of no-confidence against the Prime Minister, up to twice a year, and the motion can be passed by a two third vote.
